In this thought-provoking session, we delve into code-switching: the practice of adjusting one’s style of speech, appearance, behavior, and expression to a particular context or situation. Unpacking its significance, we’ll delve into the universality of code-switching and how it can burden people of color. Through engaging discussions and real-world examples, we dissect the complexities of code-switching and explore how it shapes personal and cultural identities, influences interpersonal dynamics, and ultimately impacts the crucial feeling of belonging in diverse communities.

George Paasewe
George Paasewe is an educator, entrepreneur, author, and DEI speaker. Professionally, George is a sociology and career development professor at Bryant & Stratton College in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.
As an author, George has published five books. Three are children’s books; the other two are his best-selling book, How Black College Students Learn Code-Switching and the second edition.
As an entrepreneur, George founded Educare Publications, a book publishing company that integrates publishing services into the classroom to teach high school and college students how to write and self-publish a book.
As a DEI speaker, George helps institutions increase their attraction, retention, and graduation rates of students of color through education on the adverse effects of code-switching and how it impacts belonging. In addition, George helps institutions save money and reduce their overall recruitment expenses.
